Project 3: Light
This proposed project for a non-denominational chapel at Farmingdale State College is driven by the goal of creating a profoundly spiritual space that welcomes people of all faiths for worship and reflection on life's events. The key concept to achieving this vision is the creative use of light. Recognizing the significant role light plays in fostering a spiritual atmosphere, the design focuses on innovative methods to control the entrance of light into the space.

Light Background Research

Natural light enters the Cornaro Chapel through a hidden window above the main scene, cleverly built into the architecture. This window is not easily visible to viewers, but it allows sunlight to shine down onto the central sculpture of Saint Teresa and the angel. The light creates a dramatic effect, making the scene look more heavenly and emphasizing the spiritual experience. The sculptor, Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini, used this natural light to enhance the emotional and divine feeling of the artwork.
